Questions
Raj says that 47° and 143° form a linear pair. What should the second angle be for it to form a linear pair with 47°, in degrees?
Two lines cross so that one angle is 4 times the angle next to it. What is the smaller angle, in degrees?
Lines l and m are parallel, and t is a transversal. One angle at l is 34°. Neel says the corresponding angle at m is 146°, because corresponding angles add up to 180°. What is the corresponding angle, in degrees?
Lines l and m are parallel, and t is a transversal. Can the two interior angles on the same side of t both be acute?
A transversal t crosses lines l and m. Which pair of angles, if they are equal, shows that l and m are parallel?
Answer key
- 133 — The angles of a linear pair add up to 180°. 47° + 143° = 190°, so Raj is wrong; the angle that forms a linear pair with 47° is 180° − 47° = 133°.
- 36 — Angles next to each other at a crossing form a linear pair, so x + 4x = 180°, 5x = 180° and x = 36°. The four angles are 36°, 144°, 36° and 144°, because vertically opposite angles are equal.
- 34 — For parallel lines, corresponding angles are equal, not a pair that adds up to 180°. So the corresponding angle at m is 34°. Neel's 146° (= 180° − 34°) is the angle next to it, which forms a linear pair with it.
- b) No, because they add up to 180° — For parallel lines, the interior angles on the same side of the transversal add up to 180°. Two acute angles are each less than 90°, so together they make less than 180°; they cannot both be acute. When t is perpendicular, both are 90°, which is not acute either.
- c) A pair of corresponding angles — Vertically opposite angles are equal whenever two lines cross, so they prove nothing about l and m. An equal linear pair only shows that each angle is 90°. When the corresponding angles are equal, the lines are parallel.

A worked example
Two parallel rails l and m are crossed by a path t. The two interior angles on the same side of t differ by 40°. Find both.
- For parallel lines, the interior angles on the same side of the transversal add up to 180°. Call the smaller one x; the other is x + 40°.
- So x + (x + 40°) = 180°, 2x = 140° and x = 70°: the angles are 70° and 110°.
Answer: 70° and 110°. Check: 70° + 110° = 180° and 110° − 70° = 40°.
The common mistake
Taking corresponding or alternate angles to be equal, or same-side interior angles to add up to 180°, for any two lines. These hold only when the lines are parallel; when the lines are not parallel, the corresponding angles are never equal.
