Questions
(−8) + 15 − (−3) = ?
(−4) × 5 × (−2) = ?
(−36) ÷ 4 = ?
(−3) × (−3) × (−3) = ?
It is −6 °C at night, and the temperature rises by 4 °C every hour. What is it after 3 hours, in °C?
Answer key
- 10 — −8 + 15 = 7; subtracting −3 is adding 3: 7 + 3 = 10.
- 40 — (−4) × 5 = −20; (−20) × (−2) = +40 (two negatives make a positive).
- -9 — 36 ÷ 4 = 9, and a negative divided by a positive is negative: −9.
- -27 — (−3) × (−3) = 9, and 9 × (−3) = −27.
- 6 — It rises 3 × 4 = 12 degrees: −6 + 12 = 6 °C.

A worked example
Find (−3) × (−4) × (−5), and (−48) ÷ (−6).
- (−3) × (−4) = 12, a negative times a negative is positive; then 12 × (−5) = −60.
- (−48) ÷ (−6) = 8, because both numbers are negative.
Answer: −60 and 8. Check: an odd number of negative signs (three) gives a negative product; 8 × (−6) = −48.
The common mistake
Subtracting a negative as if it were a positive: 7 − (−2) is 7 + 2 = 9, not 5.
