Questions
2/3 × 9 = ?
1/2 × 3/4 = ?
How many quarters (1/4) are there in 3?
Answer key
- 6 — 1/3 of 9 is 3, so 2/3 of 9 is 6.
- 3/8 — Multiply tops and bottoms: (1 × 3)/(2 × 4) = 3/8.
- 12 — Each whole has 4 quarters, so 3 wholes have 3 × 4 = 12.

A worked example
Find 2½ ÷ ¾.
- Write the mixed number as a fraction: 2½ = 5/2. Dividing by ¾ is multiplying by its reciprocal, 4/3.
- 5/2 × 4/3 = 20/6 = 10/3 = 3⅓.
Answer: 3⅓. Check: 3⅓ × ¾ = 10/3 × 3/4 = 30/12 = 5/2 = 2½.
The common mistake
Turning the wrong fraction over: only the divisor is flipped. And a whole number multiplies only the numerator: 2/3 × 9 = 18/3 = 6, not 18/27.
