A worked example
Arrange 0.6, 0.45 and 0.509 from the smallest to the largest.
- Give them the same number of decimal places by adding zeros: 0.600, 0.450, 0.509.
- Now compare thousandths: 450 < 509 < 600.
Answer: 0.45 < 0.509 < 0.6. Check: 0.6 = 6 tenths = 60 hundredths, which is more than 45 hundredths.
The common mistake
Thinking 0.45 is more than 0.6 because 45 is more than 6. More digits after the point does not mean a bigger number: compare place by place, starting with the tenths.
