A worked example

Write 4,07,50,000 in words, and in the international system.

  1. Indian system, commas after the first three digits from the right and then every two: 4 crore 7 lakh 50 thousand.
  2. International system, commas every three digits: 40,750,000, which is 40 million 750 thousand.

Answer: four crore seven lakh fifty thousand = forty million seven hundred fifty thousand. Check: 4 × 1,00,00,000 + 7 × 1,00,000 + 50,000 = 4,07,50,000, and 1 crore = 10 million.

The common mistake

Mixing the two comma patterns, such as 40,75,0000. Count from the right: Indian 3, then 2, 2, 2; international 3, 3, 3.
