  5. Which feature sets bacterial cells apart from the cells of yeast, plants, and animals?

    1. They are surrounded by a cell membrane
    2. They contain cytoplasm
    3. They have a nucleoid instead of a well-defined nucleus

Answer key

  1. a) Robert Hooke — Robert Hooke showed cork cells in his book Micrographia. The small compartments reminded him of a honeycomb, so he called each one a cell.
  2. c) Nucleus — The nucleus regulates all activities in the cell and also its growth. The cell membrane lets needed materials in and waste out, and most life processes happen in the cytoplasm.
  3. b) Cell → tissue → organ → organ system → organism — Similar cells form a tissue, tissues form an organ, organs work together as an organ system, and all the organ systems make up the organism.
  4. a) Rhizobium — Rhizobium lives in the root nodules of legumes and makes nitrogen from the air useful to plants. Lactobacillus turns milk into curd, and yeast makes dough rise.
  5. c) They have a nucleoid instead of a well-defined nucleus — Bacteria do not have a well-defined nucleus with a nuclear membrane; they have a nucleoid. A cell membrane and cytoplasm are found in the other cells too.

A worked example

A spoon of curd is mixed into two bowls of milk. One bowl is kept warm, the other in a refrigerator. Only the warm one sets into curd overnight. Why?

  1. Curd contains bacteria, one kind of which is Lactobacillus. They feed on the sugar in milk, multiply and turn the milk into curd, making it sour.
  2. These bacteria grow well when it is warm, so they act quickly in the warm bowl and very slowly in the cold one.

Answer: Lactobacillus bacteria need warmth to grow. Check: the cold bowl may turn only a little sour.

The common mistake

Thinking all microorganisms are harmful. Some cause disease, but others make curd and idli batter, break down waste, and help legume plants use nitrogen from the air.
