Questions
A mango falls from a tree to the ground. Which force pulls it down?
Which of these forces can act on an object without touching it?
A notebook is pushed and slides towards the east on a table. In which direction does friction act on it?
On a spring balance, the bigger marks are 1 N apart and there are 4 small divisions between them. What is the smallest weight it can read, in N?
A 1 kg object weighs about 10 N on the Earth but only about 1.6 N on the Moon. What is its mass on the Moon?
Answer key
- a) Gravitational force — The Earth pulls every object towards itself; this pull is the gravitational force (gravity). It acts without touching the mango.
- c) Magnetic force — A magnet can push or pull another magnet from a distance, so magnetic force is a non-contact force. Friction and muscular force need contact.
- b) Towards the west — Friction always acts opposite to the direction in which an object moves, so it acts towards the west and slows the notebook down.
- 0.25 — One small division = difference between the big marks ÷ number of divisions = 1 N ÷ 4 = 0.25 N.
- c) 1 kg, the same as on the Earth — Mass is the amount of matter in an object and stays the same everywhere. Only the weight changes, because the gravitational pull is different.

A worked example
A ball rolled with the same push goes much further on a smooth floor than on a carpet. Why?
- Friction acts against the motion of the rolling ball, in the direction opposite to the way it moves.
- A carpet is a rougher surface than a smooth floor, so the friction on the ball is greater there and slows it down sooner.
Answer: the rougher carpet gives more friction. Check: the push was the same, so the difference comes from the surface.
The common mistake
Thinking a moving object stops “by itself”. It stops because a force, here friction, acts against its motion. And friction needs contact; magnetic, electrostatic and gravitational forces act without touching.
