Name: ____________________Date: ____________

Questions

  1. Which state of matter has a fixed volume but takes the shape of its container?

    1. Liquid
    2. Solid
    3. Gas

  2. Arrange the states of matter from the strongest to the weakest interparticle attraction.

    1. Gas > liquid > solid
    2. Liquid > solid > gas
    3. Solid > liquid > gas

  3. A grain of potassium permanganate is dropped into hot water, room-temperature water, and ice-cold water. In which will the colour spread the fastest?

    1. Ice-cold water
    2. Hot water
    3. Water at room temperature

  4. You close the tip of an air-filled syringe with your thumb and push the plunger in. Why does the air now take up less space?

    1. Its particles are pushed closer together
    2. Its particles become smaller in size
    3. Some of its particles get destroyed

  5. In a solid, the particles are closely packed, yet small spaces remain between them. What do these spaces contain?

    1. Air
    2. Water vapour
    3. Nothing at all

Answer key

  1. a) Liquid — Liquid particles can move, but only within a limited space, so a liquid keeps its volume but takes the container's shape. A gas has no fixed volume, and a solid keeps its own shape.
  2. c) Solid > liquid > gas — Attraction is strongest in solids, a little weaker in liquids, and negligible in gases. That is why gas particles move freely in all directions.
  3. b) Hot water — Water particles move fastest in hot water, so they spread the potassium permanganate particles the quickest. Heat increases the movement of particles.
  4. a) Its particles are pushed closer together — Gas particles have a lot of space between them. Pushing the plunger forces them closer, so the same air fits in a smaller volume.
  5. c) Nothing at all — It is easy to assume the gaps are filled with air, but they contain nothing at all. They are simply empty interparticle spaces.

नाम: ____________________तारीख़: ____________

नाव: ____________________दिनांक: ____________

A worked example

Smoke from an incense stick lit in one corner can be smelt across the room, but a sugar cube on the table does not spread by itself. Why?

  1. In a gas the particles are far apart, attract each other weakly and move fast in all directions, so the smoke particles mix into the air.
  2. In a solid the particles are held close by strong attraction and only vibrate about their places, so the sugar cube keeps its shape.

Answer: gas particles move freely; solid particles only vibrate in place. Check: the smell spreads even with the fan off, so the particles themselves are moving.

The common mistake

Thinking the particles of a solid do not move at all. They vibrate about fixed positions; heating makes them vibrate harder, until the solid melts.
