A worked example

Using the digits 4 and 7 once each, make the biggest and the smallest 2-digit numbers.

  1. For the biggest, put the bigger digit in the tens place: 7 tens and 4 ones = 74.
  2. For the smallest, put the smaller digit in the tens place: 4 tens and 7 ones = 47.

Answer: 74 and 47. Check: 74 = 70 + 4 and 47 = 40 + 7.

The common mistake

Writing what is heard: “seventy-four” written as 704. Seventy-four is 7 tens and 4 ones, so it has only two digits, 74.
