A worked example

Find 8 + 6 by making a ten.

  1. 8 needs 2 more to make 10, so split 6 into 2 and 4.
  2. 8 + 2 = 10, and 10 + 4 = 14.

Answer: 14. Check: count on 6 from 8 on your fingers: 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14.

The common mistake

When counting on, saying the first number again: “8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13” gives 13. Start counting from the next number, 9, and say six numbers.
