There are 5 flowers with 4 petals on each. How many petals are there?
- Count the petals flower by flower: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20.
- That is 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4, five fours.
Answer: 20 petals. Check: count all the petals one by one: there are 20.
The common mistake
Adding the number of flowers to the number of petals (5 + 4 = 9). Draw the flowers: each flower brings 4 more petals.
