A worked example

Rani puts shells in groups of 5. She makes 7 groups. How many shells does she have?

  1. Count in fives, one finger for each group: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35.
  2. Seven fingers are up, so we stop at 35.

Answer: 35 shells. Check: 10 groups of 5 would be 50; 3 groups fewer is 15 fewer, and 50 − 15 = 35.

The common mistake

Losing track of how many groups have been counted, and stopping one group early or late. Keep one finger up for each group, so the count of groups is always in front of the child.
