54 पणत्या होत्या. पहिल्या रात्री 18 लावल्या. किती उरल्या?

A worked example
There were 72 marigold flowers. 35 were used for a garland. How many are left?
- Take away the tens first: 72 − 30 = 42.
- Then take away the ones: 42 − 5 = 37.
Answer: 37 flowers. Check: 37 + 35 = 72.
The common mistake
Taking the smaller digit from the bigger one in each column: in 72 − 35 the child does 5 − 2 = 3 in the ones and writes 43. You cannot take 5 from 2, so break one ten into ten ones first.
