A worked example
Asha's ribbon is 1 m 35 cm long and Ravi's is 90 cm. Whose is longer, and by how much?
- Change both to centimetres: 1 m 35 cm = 100 cm + 35 cm = 135 cm.
- 135 cm is more than 90 cm; 135 − 90 = 45.
Answer: Asha's, by 45 cm. Check: 90 + 45 = 135.
The common mistake
Writing 1 m 5 cm as 15 cm. One metre is 100 cm, so 1 m 5 cm is 100 + 5 = 105 cm.
