A worked example

A ribbon 24 cm long is cut into 4 equal pieces. How long is each piece? How long are 2 pieces together?

  1. 4 equal pieces: 24 ÷ 4 = 6, so each piece (one quarter) is 6 cm.
  2. 2 pieces: 6 + 6 = 12 cm, which is half of the ribbon.

Answer: 6 cm each; 12 cm for two. Check: 4 × 6 = 24, and two quarters make one half: 24 ÷ 2 = 12.

The common mistake

Thinking a quarter is bigger than a half because 4 is bigger than 2. The more equal parts you cut, the smaller each part is: a quarter of a roti is half of a half.
