  1. 9 × 6 is one six less than 10 × 6: 60 − 6 = 54.
  2. 6 × 8 is double 3 × 8: 3 × 8 = 24, and 24 + 24 = 48.

Answer: 9 × 6 = 54; 6 × 8 = 48. Check: count in sixes: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54.

The common mistake

Swapping two facts that sound alike: 7 × 8 = 56 and 6 × 9 = 54. If unsure, build it from a nearby fact (7 × 8 = 7 × 7 + 7).
