A worked example

A school library had 604 books. It gave away 258. How many books are left?

Answer: 346 books. Check: 346 + 258 = 604.

The common mistake

Writing 0 − 5 as 5 in the tens place. When a column has 0, go to the next place to the left, break one there, and carry it down.
