Class 9 old chapter names 2026-27: where each old NCERT chapter is now

CMDLearn ·

If you search for "Gravitation class 9" or "Heron's formula class 9" and find nothing that matches your new textbook, this page is for you. From 2026-27, Class 9 uses new NCERT books: Exploration for Science (13 chapters) and Ganita Manjari for Maths, in two parts (chapters 1 to 8 in Part I, 9 to 14 in Part II). Their chapter names are new, and the topics are grouped differently. Below, each old chapter name is matched to where its topics now sit, with the page in the new book.

We read these locations in the new books ourselves, chapter by chapter; no practising teacher has checked this list yet. An old chapter rarely moves whole into one new chapter. Where a topic is now split across chapters, taught in Class 8 instead, or missing from the new Class 9 books, we say so. If you spot a mistake, please tell us. For which books are new this year and which are reprints, see what changed in the 2026-27 NCERT books.

How we matched them

Science: old chapters and where they are now

Old chapter nameWhere its topics are in 2026-27
Matter in Our SurroundingsNo Class 9 chapter with this name. The particle picture of matter and the three states are now in Class 8 Curiosity Chapter 7, Particulate Nature of Matter (states, page 101; evaporation, page 105). Class 9 Chapter 5 uses evaporation, boiling points and sublimation as ways to separate mixtures (sublimation, page 84).
Is Matter Around Us PureMostly Class 9 Exploring Mixtures and their Separation (Chapter 5, from page 72): mixtures, suspensions and colloids (colloids, pages 86-87). Elements and compounds come back in Chapter 9.
Atoms and MoleculesAtomic Foundations of Matter (Chapter 9, from page 162): the laws of chemical combination (law of constant proportions, page 167), Dalton's ideas (page 168), and atomic and molecular masses (pages 179-180).
Structure of the AtomJourney Inside the Atom (Chapter 8, from page 140): Thomson's and Rutherford's models (pages 142-143), valency, and isotopes and isobars (pages 156-157).
The Fundamental Unit of LifeCell: The Building Block of Life (Chapter 2, from page 8): cell organelles such as the Golgi apparatus (page 17) and the cell theory (page 23).
TissuesTissues in Action (Chapter 3, from page 28): meristematic tissue in plants (pages 29-30), and animal tissues.
MotionDescribing Motion Around Us (Chapter 4, from page 48): position-time and distance-time graphs (pages 57-60) and uniform circular motion (page 66).
Force and Laws of MotionHow Forces Affect Motion (Chapter 6, from page 94): inertia (page 100), Newton's second law in terms of momentum (page 104) and the third law (pages 107-108).
GravitationNo Class 9 chapter. Gravitational force (weight) appears as one of the forces in Chapter 6 (pages 95 and 97), and the acceleration due to gravity, g, is used in Chapter 7 (pages 117 and 126). We did not find the universal law of gravitation in Exploration. Buoyant force and Archimedes' idea are in Class 8 Curiosity Chapter 5, Exploring Forces (page 76), and pressure in Class 8 Pressure, Winds, Storms, and Cyclones (Chapter 6, from page 80).
Work and EnergyWork, Energy, and Simple Machines (Chapter 7, from page 116): work done by a force (page 117), conservation of mechanical energy (pages 126-127) and power in watts (page 129), plus simple machines.
SoundSound Waves: Characteristics and Applications (Chapter 10, from page 184): ultrasound and infrasound (page 199), reflection of sound and echo (pages 200-201).
Improvement in Food ResourcesNo Class 9 chapter. Plant breeding gets a short passage in Chapter 11, Reproduction: How Life Continues (page 217). We did not find the old chapter's crop and animal-farming topics as a chapter in Exploration.
Health and Diseases (in CBSE's 2025-26 Class IX course)Not a Class 9 chapter. Health, communicable and non-communicable diseases are in Class 8 Curiosity Health: The Ultimate Treasure (Chapter 3, from page 28; non-communicable diseases, page 32).

Two new Science chapters have no single old chapter behind them: Patterns in Life: Diversity and Classification (Chapter 12, from page 228), and Earth as a System: Energy, Matter, and Life (Chapter 13, from page 252). Chapter 1 (from page 1) introduces the book.

Maths: old chapters and where they are now

Old chapter nameWhere its topics are in 2026-27
Number SystemsThe World of Numbers (Part I Chapter 3, from page 41): rational numbers (page 46) and irrational numbers, with the proof that √2 is irrational (pages 53-55). We did not find rationalising denominators or the laws of exponents for real numbers there; exponents are taught in Class 8 Ganita Prakash Part 1, Power Play (Chapter 2, from page 19).
PolynomialsSplit. Introduction to Linear Polynomials (Part I Chapter 2, from page 16) covers linear polynomials only, and Exploring Algebraic Identities (Part I Chapter 4, from page 68) covers the identities. We did not find the remainder theorem or the factor theorem in either part.
Coordinate GeometryOrienting Yourself: The Use of Coordinates (Part I Chapter 1, from page 1).
Linear Equations in Two VariablesTwo Variables, One Line (Part II Chapter 13, from page 85): the form ax + by + c = 0 (page 86), and now also solving a pair of such equations.
Introduction to Euclid's GeometryNo chapter. Statements and their converses, the groundwork for proof, are in Propositions and their Converses (Part II Chapter 9, from page 1). Euclid's name appears in Part II Chapter 11, The World of Algorithms, for his method of finding a gcd (pages 46-47), not for geometry.
Lines and AnglesNo chapter of its own. Vertically opposite angles and transversals are used inside the proofs of Part II Chapter 12, Quadrilaterals (pages 57-58 and 62). The basics are taught earlier, in Class 6 Ganita Prakash, Lines and Angles (Chapter 2, from page 13), and Class 7 Part 1, Parallel and Intersecting Lines (Chapter 5: vertically opposite angles, page 108; transversals, page 114).
TrianglesNo chapter of its own. The congruence tests are used in proofs elsewhere, for example SSS in Part I Chapter 5 on circles (page 99) and in Part II Chapter 12 (page 58). Congruence itself is taught in Class 7 Ganita Prakash Part 2, Geometric Twins (Chapter 1: SSS, page 6; SAS, page 10).
QuadrilateralsQuadrilaterals (Part II Chapter 12, from page 51), including the midpoint theorem and its converse (pages 63-64).
CirclesI'm Up and Down, and Round and Round (Part I Chapter 5, from page 92): chords and the angles they subtend at the centre (pages 93 and 99).
Heron's FormulaMeasuring Space: Perimeter and Area (Part I Chapter 6, from page 118), in a section on Heron's formula (pages 134-135).
Surface Areas and VolumesMath of Space: Surface Area and Volume (Part II Chapter 14, from page 123).
StatisticsPartly. How Quantities Combine: Understanding Data (Part II Chapter 10, from page 8) works with averages, including the weighted average (pages 8 and 12). Mean and median are in Class 8 Ganita Prakash Part 2, Tales by Dots and Lines (Chapter 5, from page 103). We did not find histograms in either part of the new Class 9 book.

Three new Maths chapters are not in this list because no old Class 9 chapter matches them: The Mathematics of Maybe: Introduction to Probability (Part I Chapter 7, from page 155), Predicting What Comes Next: Exploring Sequences and Progressions (Part I Chapter 8, from page 174), and The World of Algorithms (Part II Chapter 11, from page 37).
