A worked example
An auto travels 36 km every day. How far does it travel in 15 days?
- Split 15 into 10 and 5: 36 × 10 = 360 and 36 × 5 = 180.
- Add the two parts: 360 + 180 = 540.
Answer: 540 km. Check: 36 × 15 = 15 × 36 = 15 × 30 + 15 × 6 = 450 + 90 = 540.
The common mistake
Forgetting the zero when multiplying by the tens digit: writing 36 × 1 = 36 instead of 36 × 10 = 360, and getting 36 + 180 = 216.
