A worked example

84 bangles are packed equally into 6 boxes. How many bangles go in each box?

  1. Split 84 into parts that 6 divides easily: 84 = 60 + 24.
  2. 60 ÷ 6 = 10 and 24 ÷ 6 = 4, so each box gets 10 + 4 = 14.

Answer: 14 bangles in each box. Check: 14 × 6 = 84.

The common mistake

Ignoring what is left over. If 50 children go in autorickshaws that take 8 each, 50 ÷ 8 is 6 with 2 left over, so 7 autorickshaws are needed, not 6.
