A village collected 2,350 kg of waste in a week. 1,476 kg was wet waste. How much was dry waste?

  1. Estimate first: about 2,350 − 1,500 = 850.
  2. Subtract: 2,350 − 1,476 = 874.

Answer: 874 kg of dry waste. Check: 874 + 1,476 = 2,350, and 874 is close to the estimate of 850.

The common mistake

Not lining up the places. Write ones under ones and tens under tens, starting from the right; an estimate first shows a wrong answer at once.
