Questions

  1. Water left on a steel plate slowly disappears without seeping through it. What is this change of water into vapour called?

    1. Condensation
    2. Evaporation
    3. Freezing

  2. Drops form on the outside of a glass of ice-cold water, while the water level inside stays the same. Where do the drops come from?

    1. Water seeping out through the glass
    2. Water vapour in the air condensing on the cold surface
    3. Ice escaping from the glass and melting

  3. Equal amounts of water are put in a bottle cap and spread on a plate, kept side by side. Which dries first?

    1. Both dry at the same time
    2. The water in the bottle cap
    3. The water spread on the plate

  4. Why does water kept in an earthen pot (matka) become cool, while water in a steel pot does not?

    1. Water vapour from the air condenses inside the pot
    2. Some of the water freezes into ice inside the pot
    3. Water seeps through the pot's surface and evaporates, which cools the water

  5. On which kind of day do wet clothes dry the slowest?

    1. A rainy, humid day
    2. A hot, sunny day
    3. A windy day

Answer key

  1. b) Evaporation — The conversion of water into its vapour state is evaporation; it goes on even at room temperature.
  2. b) Water vapour in the air condensing on the cold surface — Water vapour in the air turns into droplets when it touches a cold surface (condensation). The level inside does not drop, so nothing seeps out.
  3. c) The water spread on the plate — Water spread on a plate has a larger area exposed to air, so it evaporates faster.
  4. c) Water seeps through the pot's surface and evaporates, which cools the water — Water seeps through the clay and evaporates from the outside. Evaporation causes a cooling effect on the water inside.
  5. a) A rainy, humid day — On rainy days the air already holds a lot of water vapour (high humidity), so water evaporates slowly.

A worked example

Washing hung out on a hot, sunny and windy day dries sooner than on a cool, still day. Why?

  1. Drying is evaporation: liquid water on the cloth changes into water vapour.
  2. Evaporation is faster when it is hotter, and wind carries the vapour away from the cloth, so more water can evaporate.

Answer: heat and wind both speed up evaporation. Check: spread equal wet cloths in sun and shade and compare the time they take to dry.

The common mistake

Thinking clouds are water vapour. Clouds are tiny drops of liquid water, formed when vapour cools and condenses around dust; many drops join to fall as rain.
