Iron, copper and aluminium look shiny on a freshly cut surface. What do we call materials with such a shine?
You can see a friend through frosted glass, but not clearly. Frosted glass is therefore:
When Ghulan's mother stirred sugar into water, the sugar disappeared. Such a material is called:
Which two properties does every material have, so that all materials count as matter?
1 m³ equals 1000 L. How many litres of water does a full tank of 3 m³ hold (in litres)?
Answer key
- b) Lustrous — Materials with shiny surfaces are called lustrous; metals usually show lustre, best seen on freshly cut surfaces.
- c) Translucent — Materials through which objects can be seen, but not clearly, are translucent, like butter paper and frosted glass.
- a) Soluble in water — Materials that completely disappear when mixed in water dissolve in it, so they are soluble in water.
- b) Mass and volume — Not all materials are shiny, hard or soluble, but all have mass and occupy space (volume). Anything with mass that occupies space is matter.
- 3000 — Each cubic metre is 1000 L, so 3 m³ = 3 × 1000 = 3000 L.

A worked example
Sort these by how well you can see through them: a window glass, a butter paper, a cardboard sheet and a steel plate.
- You can see clearly through window glass, so it is transparent. Through butter paper you see only a blur, so it is translucent.
- Light does not pass through cardboard or steel at all, so both are opaque.
Answer: transparent: window glass; translucent: butter paper; opaque: cardboard, steel plate. Check: hold each one up to a lamp or a window.
The common mistake
Thinking that sugar stirred into water has gone because it cannot be seen. It has dissolved: taste the water, and it is sweet.
