Questions
Which scientist discovered the neutron in 1932?
In the gold foil experiment, most alpha particles passed straight through the foil. What did Rutherford conclude from this?
An atom has 17 protons and 20 neutrons in its nucleus. What is its mass number?
Calcium (atomic number 20) and argon (atomic number 18) both have atoms with mass number 40. What are such atoms called?
An element X occurs in nature as two isotopes: one of mass 10 u (20%) and one of mass 11 u (80%). What is its weighted average atomic mass, in u?
Answer key
- a) James Chadwick — James Chadwick found a neutral particle with mass nearly equal to that of a proton. Thomson discovered the electron, and Bohr proposed energy levels.
- c) Most of an atom is empty space — Because most of the atom is empty, most alpha particles meet nothing and go straight. The few large deflections showed a tiny, dense, positive nucleus.
- 37 — Mass number = protons + neutrons = 17 + 20 = 37. Electrons have negligible mass, so they are not counted.
- a) Isobars — Isobars are atoms of different elements with the same mass number but different atomic numbers. Isotopes share the same atomic number instead.
- 10.8 — Multiply each isotope's mass by its share and add: 10 × 20/100 + 11 × 80/100 = 2 + 8.8 = 10.8 u.

A worked example
A sodium atom has atomic number 11 and mass number 23. How many protons, electrons and neutrons does it have?
- The atomic number is the number of protons: 11. A neutral atom has as many electrons as protons: 11.
- Mass number = protons + neutrons, so neutrons = 23 − 11 = 12. The 11 electrons are arranged 2, 8, 1.
Answer: 11 protons, 11 electrons, 12 neutrons. Check: 11 + 12 = 23, and 2 + 8 + 1 = 11.
The common mistake
Adding the electrons into the mass number. Only protons and neutrons count; an electron's mass is so small that it is left out.
