Questions
Ritu wants to show 23 votes with tally marks. She draws four bundles of five (four marks with a line through them) and 2 single marks. How many single marks should she draw after the four bundles?
In pictograph A one symbol stands for 6 paper boats, and Ravi's row has 7 symbols. In pictograph B one symbol stands for 8 paper boats, and Meena's row has 5 symbols. How many more paper boats did Ravi make than Meena?
One symbol stands for 6 books, and half a symbol may be used. Sana draws 3 symbols and a half symbol and writes 20 books. How many books does her row really show?
A bar graph uses the scale 1 unit length = 12 books. Kabir draws a bar 8 units long to show 84 books. How many units long should the bar be?
Seven children scored these marks in a quiz: 7, 9, 6, 9, 8, 9, 7. One more child joins and scores 7. Which mark do the most children score now?
Answer key
- 3 — Four bundles of five show 4 × 5 = 20 votes, so 23 − 20 = 3 single marks are needed. Ritu's tally shows 20 + 2 = 22, one vote short.
- 2 — Read each row with its own key: Ravi made 7 × 6 = 42 paper boats and Meena made 5 × 8 = 40. Ravi made 42 − 40 = 2 more, even though the two keys differ.
- 21 — Sana counted the half symbol as 2 books, but half of 6 is 3. Three whole symbols show 3 × 6 = 18 books and the half symbol shows 6 ÷ 2 = 3, so the row shows 18 + 3 = 21 books, not 20.
- 7 — Each unit of length stands for 12 books, so 84 books need 84 ÷ 12 = 7 units. Kabir's 8-unit bar shows 8 × 12 = 96 books.
- c) 7 and 9 equally — Count each mark: 6 once, 7 twice, 8 once and 9 three times. The new child adds one more 7, so 7 and 9 now come 3 times each: they are scored by the most children equally.

A worked example
A bar graph of books read uses the scale 1 unit length = 5 books. The bars for Anu, Babu and Charu are 6, 9 and 4 units long. How many books did the three read altogether?
- Add the bar lengths first: 6 + 9 + 4 = 19 units.
- Each unit of length stands for 5 books, so 19 × 5 = 95 books.
Answer: 95 books. Check: 6 × 5 + 9 × 5 + 4 × 5 = 30 + 45 + 20 = 95.
The common mistake
Reading the length of a bar as the number itself and forgetting the scale: a bar 6 units long on a scale of 1 unit length = 5 books shows 30 books, not 6. Read the scale of a bar graph (or the key of a pictograph) first.
