Questions

  1. The temperature was 3 °C in the evening and fell by 7 degrees at night. What was it at night, in °C?

  2. −5 + 8 = ?

  3. A lift is at floor 2. It goes down 5 floors. Which floor is it at now? (The ground floor is 0; floors below the ground are negative.)

  4. Which number is smaller: −7 or −2?

    1. −7
    2. −2

  5. In a game you score +6, then −9, then +4. What is your total score?

Answer key

  1. -4 — From 3, go down 3 to reach 0, then 4 more below zero: −4 °C.
  2. 3 — Start at −5 on the number line and move 8 steps right: you reach 3.
  3. -3 — 2 − 5 = −3: three floors below the ground floor.
  4. a) −7 — On the number line −7 is further left than −2, so −7 is smaller.
  5. 1 — 6 − 9 = −3, and −3 + 4 = 1.

A worked example

A diver is 12 m below sea level. She rises 5 m, then dives 9 m. Where is she now?

  1. Below sea level is negative: start at −12. Rising 5 m: −12 + 5 = −7.
  2. Diving 9 m: −7 − 9 = −16.

Answer: 16 m below sea level (−16). Check: she went 5 m up and 9 m down, a net 4 m down from −12.

The common mistake

Thinking −8 is more than −3 because 8 is more than 3. On the number line, −8 is further left, so it is smaller: −8 < −3.
