A worked example

A truck has to cover 5,000 km. It covers 1,875 km on the first day and 1,690 km on the second. How far is left?

Answer: 1,435 km. Check: 3,565 + 1,435 = 5,000; estimate 1,900 + 1,700 = 3,600, so about 1,400 km left.

The common mistake

Taking each day away from 5,000 and forgetting the other one. Add what is done first, or take away both days one after the other.
