Class 10 Science: Control and Coordination, 8 practice questions with answers
These are 8 practice questions on NCERT Class 10 Science Chapter 6, Control and Coordination, each with a short answer and the textbook page it comes from. They cover the hormones the chapter names: auxin, gibberellins, cytokinins and abscisic acid in plants, and insulin, thyroxin and adrenaline in animals. Try each one before you read the answer.
These questions are our own, drafted with AI help. Every answer was checked against the chapter, but no practising teacher has reviewed them yet. If you find a mistake, please tell us.
Plant hormones
Question 1. Which plant hormone, made at the shoot tip, helps cells grow longer so that a shoot bends towards light? (Abscisic acid; insulin; or auxin.)
Answer: auxin. When growing plants detect light, auxin, synthesised at the shoot tip, helps the cells to grow longer. (Page 108.)
Question 2. When light comes from one side of a plant, where does the auxin go, and why does the shoot bend towards the light?
Answer: Auxin diffuses towards the shady side of the shoot. The concentration of auxin stimulates the cells on the side away from the light to grow longer, so the plant appears to bend towards the light. (Page 108.)
Question 3. Look at these five hormones: auxin, gibberellins, cytokinins, abscisic acid and insulin. How many of them are plant hormones that promote growth?
Answer: 3. Auxin and gibberellins help the stem grow, and cytokinins promote cell division, so these three promote growth. Abscisic acid inhibits growth, and insulin is an animal hormone. (Page 108.)
Question 4. What is one effect of abscisic acid on a plant? (It makes cells divide in fruits; it inhibits growth and leaves may wilt; or it makes the stem grow faster.)
Answer: it inhibits growth, and its effects include wilting of leaves. Plants also need signals to stop growing, and abscisic acid is one example of a hormone that inhibits growth. (Page 108.)
Animal hormones
Question 5. Which hormone, made by the pancreas, helps regulate blood sugar? (Thyroxin; adrenaline; or insulin.)
Answer: insulin. Insulin is produced by the pancreas and helps in regulating blood sugar levels. If it is not secreted in proper amounts, the sugar level in the blood rises, causing many harmful effects. (Page 110.)
Question 6. Assertion (A): Doctors advise using iodised salt in the diet. Reason (R): The thyroid gland needs iodine to make the hormone thyroxin. Choose the correct option: both true and R explains A; both true but R does not explain A; A true and R false; or A false and R true.
Answer: A and R are both true, and R explains A. Iodine is necessary for the thyroid gland to make thyroxin, which regulates carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism in the body. (Page 110.)
Question 7. Which hormone is secreted from the adrenal glands and is carried by the blood to the heart and other parts of the body?
Answer: adrenaline. It is secreted directly into the blood and carried to different parts of the body; the target organs include the heart. (Page 109.)
Question 8. How many of these are animal hormones: insulin, thyroxin, auxin, adrenaline?
Answer: 3. Insulin (pancreas), thyroxin (thyroid) and adrenaline (adrenal glands) are animal hormones: 3. Auxin is a plant hormone. (Pages 108 to 110.)
