Run an Hour of AI with your class: a free 1-period plan (Hindi and English)
In short: this is a 40 to 45 minute plan for one class period, for Classes 3 to 8. Most of it needs no computer, no phone and no internet: paper, a textbook and a few voices. It is built from three guides we already publish, and it points you to the official Hour of AI activities for the last part of the period if you have devices. The plan is also written in Hindi below.
What "Hour of AI" is, and the dates
Hour of AI is a global campaign of free, one-hour activities that introduce children to AI. It builds on the Hour of Code. Its website, hourofai.org, says new activities launch on 16 November, and that the big moment is Computer Science Education Week, 7 to 11 December 2026. It also says an Hour of AI "works any time of year". Its activities are "available for any devices — or none at all", and its how-to page says an Hour of AI "fits in a single class period or a lunch break".
We do not run it and we are not part of it. The activities, teacher notes and videos are on hourofai.org; we do not copy them here. Many activities are offered in more than one language; the site has a Hindi language option, but check each activity, because not all of them may be available in Hindi.
Before you start (10 minutes the day before)
- Read the official how-to at hourofai.org/how-to and pick one official activity for the last part of the period. Try it yourself first and skim its teacher notes. If you have no devices, skip it and use our closing part instead.
- Cut six strips of paper for Part 3 and five for Part 4 (instructions in each part).
- Have the textbook of your subject ready. The check-the-facts part uses it.
- Nothing needs to be printed, bought or installed. There is nothing to sign up for on our side.
The plan, at a glance
| Time | Part | What it teaches | Class |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 5 min | 1. Finish my sentence | AI guesses what usually comes next | 3 to 8 |
| 5 to 15 min | 2. The mango machine | AI learns from examples; too few, or all alike, teach it wrong | 3 to 8 (from about age 8) |
| 15 to 27 min | 3. Spot the made-up fact | AI can sound sure and be wrong, so we check | 5 to 8 |
| 27 to 37 min | 4. Helper or cheater? | Use AI to learn, not to skip learning | 5 to 8 |
| 37 to 43 min | 5. Official Hour of AI activity, or our closing questions | Apply it, then say it back | 3 to 8 |
| 43 to 45 min | Exit | One sentence each | all |
For Classes 3 to 5 use Parts 1, 2 and 5 only (about 25 minutes), and stretch each part with questions. The activities are the same ones in our guide 7 AI activities for kids that need no computer, which gives each activity's full steps; here you get only the timing and the teacher moves.
The plan, part by part
Part 1 (5 min): finish my sentence
Say the start of a line every child knows and let them finish it. Then ask, "How did you know?" They will say they have heard it many times. Say that a chatbot works much the same way: it has read a huge amount of text and guesses what comes next. Write one sentence on the board: AI guesses what usually comes next. (Full steps: activity 1 in the no-computer guide.)
Part 2 (10 min): the mango machine
"You are a computer that has never seen fruit. I will teach you what a mango is, only with examples." Give three examples, all yellow and oval. Ask whether a yellow lemon is a mango, and whether a green raw mango is one. Let the children argue why a person knows and the machine might not. Board sentence: Too few or all-alike examples teach the machine the wrong lesson. (Fuller 10-minute script: Explain AI to a Class 6 student in 10 minutes.)
Part 3 (12 min): spot the made-up fact (Classes 5 to 8)
Before the period, write six statements on slips: four true ones copied from your textbook and two that sound true but are invented. Groups of four to six get the slips and may use only the textbook to decide which are real. Debrief: the invented ones sounded just as sure as the true ones. Board sentence: AI can be confidently wrong, so check it in the book. (Activity 4 in the guide; it suggests 15 minutes, so keep to 12 by using fewer slips if you need.)
Part 4 (10 min): helper or cheater? (Classes 5 to 8)
Write five situations on slips, for example "asks AI to explain fractions in simpler words" and "copies an AI answer into a test". Groups sort them into Helper, Not OK and It depends, and say why. Disagreement is good. Board sentence: AI can help me learn, it should not do my thinking. (Activity 7 in the guide.)
Part 5 (6 min): the official activity, or three closing questions
If you have devices, run the official Hour of AI activity you picked from hourofai.org; we do not reproduce it. If you have none, ask these three questions and let pairs answer in their own words:
- How does a chatbot decide what to say? (Good answer: it guesses the next word from patterns in a lot of text.)
- Why might an AI call a lemon a mango? (It learned from too few or too similar examples.)
- An AI tells you a fact for your project. What do you do? (Check it in the book or with a teacher.)
Exit (2 min)
Each child finishes the sentence "AI is a tool, and I should ____" on a slip of paper and hands it in. It is not marked.
How this fits the CBSE curriculum
On 1 April 2026 CBSE issued Circular Acad-15/2026 to the heads of its affiliated schools. It launches a Computational Thinking and AI curriculum for Classes III to VIII from the 2026-27 session. Our guide CBSE's AI curriculum for Classes 3 to 8 explains what each class learns. This period is not a replacement for it: it is one hour of AI awareness, and a way to show the ideas (patterns, examples, checking) before a unit. State boards decide their own syllabi; the ideas are useful anywhere.
